Frequently asked questions about Cooperative Care

What is cooperative care for dogs and why is it important?

Cooperative Care is a training protocol that teaches dogs to participate willingly in handling, husbandry, and routine veterinary procedures. Unlike generic gentle and low stress handling approaches, Cooperative Care is based on predictable routines, voluntary participation, and empowerment. Dogs are taught to provide clear start and stop signals, so they can indicate when they are ready to engage and when they need a break. Handlers respond to these signals consistently, reinforcing trust and security, and providing a sense of bodily autonomy.

The approach is rooted in behavioural science, which has proven that by providing choice, dogs experience less fear and stress, recover more quickly from challenging situations, and are less likely to escalate to defensive behaviours. In turn, they are more likely to comply and less likely to opt out or resist routine handling. At its core - Cooperative Care focuses on building emotional resilience and confidence.

Which dogs would benefit the most from cooperative care training?

Any dog can benefit, but particularly reactive dogs, fearful dogs, rescues, and dogs who struggle during vet visits, grooming, etc.

What problems does cooperative care help solve?

Cooperative Care helps solve issues like fear and anxiety during vet visits, resistance to grooming, difficulty with general handling, and defensive behaviours. It empowers dogs to have a voice in their care, leading to a calmer and more cooperative relationship with their owners and caregivers. It also helps empower dogs to make good choices, and can significantly reduce bite risk.

What makes my cooperative care training unique or better than other options available?
